Few computer operating systems have stood the test of time as long as Unix, first developed in 1969 and still widely used today. As a result, many information technology professionals have decided to specialize in Unix administration.
Unix administrators have many different backgrounds and experience levels, but all of them must always remember to check their backup systems and make sure any restore functions remain working.
Entry level workers in this field must know how to use at least two Unix shells and be able to monitor systems and perform basic security functions. They must also know how to securely find, move, remove, and redirect files. As workers advance in the field, they will be handed additional responsibilities such as adding or deleting user accounts, basic programming tasks, and the administering of smaller sites on their own.
Senior Unix administrators manage larger sites, perform security audits, supervise other employees, and do more advanced programming work. Although it is possible to enter the field with a high school diploma or a two-year college diploma, a four-year university degree in computer science is often required for advancement. Starting salaries average just over C
$50,000, while senior administrators can make over C
$100,000.
