Support Worker
Considering the increasing life expectancy in Canada, it is unsurprising that more and more care homes are opening their doors for business. Unable to help themselves, the residents of these homes require hands-on assistance, fortunately provided by a growing army of support workers. In addition, these support workers also provide home visits for those in lesser need of assistance.
Applicants for such positions should have completed high school as a very minimum. In addition, they should have other relevant qualifications, depending on the job requirements. First-aid and CPR certifications are useful, as are any qualifications in more advanced nursing.
In many cases, the position also requires a support worker to work shifts, in the evening or on weekends. Serving meals, dressing residents and doing laundry are among the many tasks that the role may require.
Salaries range from C
$24,000 to C
$40,000, depending on experience and location. The average starting salary across the country is around C
$27,000.
