Stationary Engineer
This specialized job involves the operation, inspection, maintenance and repair of heat, light and climate control equipment. Stationary engineers need to be trained in all aspects of the work, which involves mechanical, electrical, thermal, chemical and metallurgical engineering, and there is a strong focus on safety throughout.
Stationary engineers work in a range of environments, including factories, warehouses, hospitals and power generation plants, as well as residential and commercial buildings. Equipment worked on may include pumps, generators, low- and high-pressure boilers, gas compressors, air conditioners and computerized control systems, to name just a few.
Numeracy and literacy skills are essential requirements as the job entails analyzing and recording instrument readings, as well as reading blueprints and technical diagrams. Candidates must have reached an acceptable level of college or vocational training and hold a relevant diploma before working in this field. Average wages are in the region of C
$37 an hour and can be as high as C
$41.
