Consumers’ judge companies on their products and, as such, the role of the quality engineer is paramount in making sure that the product that reaches the consumer is of the highest quality possible. Engineers will be involved in all aspects of quality control, including testing, evaluation and inspection of materials, processes and final products.
Skills needed include a high level of attention to detail, good knowledge of all aspects of the manufacturing process and excellent interpersonal skills. The ability to problem solve is also essential, as quality engineers are expected to constantly come up with better ways of ensuring and improving the quality of manufactured products.
The job usually requires a degree in a subject such as industrial engineering or mechanical engineering or a related field. A number of years experience working in manufacturing and quality assurance is also often required. Engineers will also deal with marketing and sales departments, as well as customers, to explain the technical details of a product. Salaries average at around C
$85,000 per year.
