Occupational Health Nurse

An occupational health nurse (OHN) fulfils a wide range of medical roles within the workplace. The primary function of this type of work is to ensure that employees are cared for and their health is looked after. As well as being responsible for primary healthcare an OHN’s responsibilities include managing health programs and establishing ways of promoting health in a particular work environment.
To enter this area of public health, a candidate must have a nursing diploma or degree. Many employers will be keen to see evidence of additional experience and training. An OHN will also require a licence to work in the province of their choice.
OHN’s can be found in almost any type of workplace, from medical institutions to manufacturing plants, oil rigs, service industries and insurance firms to name but a few. Essential qualities include good organizational skills, excellent attention to detail and the ability to get on with a wide range of people.
The average wage for an OHN is in the region of C
$50,000, but can increase with experience.
