Marine Engineer

Marine engineers play a crucial role in the design, construction and maintenance of ships, boats and other water-borne vessels. Working closely with the architect, marine engineers may focus on a vessel’s propulsion, steering mechanism or auxiliary power machinery, depending on their exact specialization. There is also the opportunity to specialize in repair, maintenance or inspection.
Jobs exist within the military, the government, transportation organizations and private ship-building companies. Freelance consultancy work is also available. Some engineers take on supervisory roles, in charge of crews who install electrical equipment in ships or heating or cooling systems for the protection of cargo.
Being a team player, having the ability to multitask and the flexibility to travel are important qualities looked for by employers, who generally pay a monthly salary of between C
$3,500 and C
$4,500 for a 40-hour week. It is also necessary to have good technical writing skills, as the job may involve record-keeping and producing reports on engine performance. Three or four-year diplomas in marine engineering are often essential requirements for the job. Course providers include the Fisheries and Marine Institute in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia Community College.
