Mainframe programmers are responsible for the functioning of centralized computers and focus on the systems level software. Responsibilities include programming, troubleshooting and maintenance of the computers that receive and send transmissions from individual computers within an organization.
Duties include writing operating systems software and testing the software. Other tasks may include defining functional specifications and research work. An important skill for this job is the ability to troubleshoot and review the overall system. Mainframe programmers are required to make sure that the computer processes are not disrupted and that the programmed jobs can be completed as scheduled.
Candidates for the job need to have knowledge of software database engineering mythologies and software database standards. They need to be up to date on programming languages and have knowledge of CICS. The job requires interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written. In addition, candidates should have good organizational and analytical skills.
Mainframe programmers need to be able to function under pressure and be motivated to comply with deadlines. It is possible to find jobs for a variety of organizations including medical, military and individual businesses. The pay scale for the role is between C
$35,000 and C
$60,000.
