Indispensible to the IT field is the wireless communications technician, who constructs and maintains the infrastructure which support wireless communications systems. These systems involve cellular phones, beepers, two-way radios, WiFi access, portable computers, marine radios, GPS equipment, satellite systems and other related equipment.
Technicians must be familiar with digital radio technology, cellular systems, and general electronics. They should know how to utilize diagnostic tools to check, adjust, and fix electronic equipment; they should be proficient in technical jargon and be able to read work orders describing equipment failures; they must be able to communicate with equipment operators to identify any problems existing with the equipment.
If the equipment shows serious problems, the employee is expected to use schematic drawings to identify and repair problems. Field technicians frequently carry out regular maintenance work on telecom devices used by corporate clients, whereas bench technicians stay in stores, service centres, and repair facilities.
