As earth’s environment is changing at its most rapid rate in 10,000 years, mostly due to manmade causes, environmental science has become one of the most important and relevant career fields. These scientists also analyse the safety of soil, air, water, and other natural resources in addition to making and enforcing environmental protection laws. Although much of this work occurs in offices and laboratories, outdoor field work opportunities are also frequent.
Some environmental scientists focus on environmental work within other specialist fields. Environmental biologists work to protect plants and animals, while environmental chemists determine how certain chemicals may harm the environment.
