The electrical designer must understand the Canadian Electrical Code, be proficient in 3D modelling and AutoCAD, as well as have a technical school diploma such as RET, CET, P TECH or RPT, any of which are considered to be a great asset by employers. The designer will design, control and enhance existing electrical systems such as MCC/switchgear, hazardous areas, lighting, grounding, UPS, cable tray systems, VFDs and instrumentation wiring.
Experience in costs, leadership and communication to a high level is a bonus. The job holder will be required to use vendor drawings, equipment lists and P&IDs, as well as to work alongside other designers, engineers, clients and vendors. Mentoring junior or less experienced electrical designers is often required.
