Law Clerk

Law clerks play an essential part in the legal and judicial system. These individuals perform several duties critical in the legal process. The principal function of this person is to assist a judge or an attorney in: carrying out research, preparing legal documents such as affidavits and drafts of motions and briefs, interviewing expert witnesses, delivering subpoenas to witnesses, and arranging travel and lodging for witnesses.
Law clerks are required to have strong skills in written and verbal communication, persuasion, time-management, organization, decision-making and problem-solving as well as an ability to think critically, and a solid understanding of legal jargon. This person is often a law student who aspires to obtain legal experience before applying for their licensure. Some job holders hold a degree in paralegal studies.
The average salary of this individual will depend on the place of employment and the level of experience and skill. In Canada, the pay scale for those working at the local level ranges between C
$35,000 and C
$50,000 per annum. On the other hand, those working at the federal level may earn up to C
$100,000, based on experience.
