Individuals pursuing jobs in finance are part of the monetary core of an organization and work to ensure that a business remains profitable and compliant while managing cash flow and working capital levels. Those working for public entities help to ensure such organizations remain fiscally responsible, efficient and on budget.
There are dozens of different positions in finance in every industry and organization imaginable, including within the financial industry itself, in accounting firms and government agencies, as well as in the manufacturing and service industries or nearly any other form of commerce. These include senior officers, managers, clerks, accountants, auditors, advisors, economists, analysts, and controllers, among many others.
People working in this field generally can gain entry-level employment with the minimum requirement of a bachelor’s degree. Related fields such as accounting or economics are also accepted. Those working in senior-level positions often have an MBA and/or some sort of related post-graduate certificate while many specialists have some sort of specific certification (such as a chartered accountant). Base salaries for entry level positions in this field start at about C
$30,000 in Canada; however, senior managers such as a CFO can earn well over C
$200,000 annually plus bonuses.
