Community Support Worker
To become a community support worker, the candidate must be prepared for a hands-on role and dedicated to help society’s most vulnerable. This career can begin once the individual has achieved either a certificate or a diploma in a field related to social or behavioral care. For those looking to advance into a management position, a college degree in one of these fields is required. A first-aid certificate is usually needed.
The main duty of this role is to take care of those in need. Each individual has different needs and the community support worker must liaise with health and social assistance professionals to determine what role they should play. This could mean assisting the elderly and the disabled to attain a life with dignity, by bathing and keeping their house tidy for example, whilst making sure they take any prescriptive medicine. They should also provide emotional support to those who need it, and seek ways to integrate the individual into the wider community if required.
The salary for this role is anywhere between C
$27,000 and C
$44,000. The individual should expect to be asked to work overtime on a regular basis.
