A Cna, or certified nursing assistant, interacts with patients in numerous types of medical settings including care homes, hospitals, clinics, extended care units and patients’ homes. He or she works underneath a supervising registered nurse, and in Canada the position is often referred to as a personal support worker.
These individuals’ typical duties include measuring and reporting vital signs such as blood pressure and temperature and tending to essential patient care needs including eating, bathing, dressing and grooming. They also assist nurses and doctors with basic treatment and administrative functions such as applying and removing dressings, applying ice packs and discharging and transferring patients.
Most positions in Canada require candidates to have official certification though this is not officially required. Important attributes for those working in this role include displaying friendly attitude, being empathetic, compassionate and assertive in addition to having the ability to communicate effectively and clearly. Cna salaries start at a bit above C
$20,000 per year in most places and extend up to C
$35,000 with experience, though many people chose to move on to higher rankings in medicine.
