Chemical Lab Technician

There are endless tasks that go into the creation of new drugs, and chemical lab technicians are there in the trenches doing the hard work. Pharmaceutical companies never stop trying to develop new medicine for their customers, so lab work to find the next big cure is a ceaseless process.
Most chemical lab techs run the tests and assist the senior scientists at the firm. They spend much of their time analysing natural and synthetic compounds for research and development, using techniques like microscopy, spectroscopy, chromatography and chemical separation.
Attention to detail is a major quality needed to be a good chemical lab technician. Records must be kept of everything and they need to be organised. Good communication skills and knowledge of computer software are also helpful assets.
Technicians typically have a Bachelors degree in chemistry or a related science, though there are entry-level jobs for those with a two-year degree in process technology. The average wage is C
$20 an hour, which works out to around C
$42,000 a year.
