X Ray Technologist
Also often called radiographic technologists, an x ray technologist works in a specialized area that involves producing diagnostic images of patients’ bodies on radiographic film. Most technologists will find work in hospitals but some will enter private clinics or be put in charge of mobile x ray vans capable of transporting the technology to patients unable to come to the hospital.
As well as being experts in producing detailed images of peoples’ bodies, the x ray technologist is trained to administer radiation therapy. Good communication skills are required for this line of work as radiation treatment often makes patients nervous. Stamina is also recommended as patients often have to be arranged into positions from which the best pictures can be taken.
The job holder is also in charge of protecting anyone in the vicinity from harm and must explain the images to physicians and other medical staff. Advancement opportunities in the field are good but usually require additional training. Technologists can expect to earn between C
$45,000 and C
$60,000 per year.
