A career in security requires skills with the regulation of an establishment's security systems and the operation of security equipment. Furthermore, the ability to monitor systems according to the organisation’s policies and procedures is required. It is also important to be able to deal with emergency situations and possess excellent decision-making skills, as well having the ability to deal with conflict situations competently.
Other required attributes include reasonable written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team. The ability to use computers is also sometimes needed. Excellent interpersonal skills are required, as security roles often involve working with the public.
Completion of high school is essential for this job. There are no specific qualifications required, however, and organiations usually offer in-house training to their staff. Door people will be required to undergo specific training. Higher-level roles in security may require experience in the supervision of staff.
