  • working from remote camp? 10-Oct-2016

Hello, I’m a chef and I’ve been thinking about working in remote locations, there are some here in Canada but I don’t want to be gone for too long. I still want to be able to spend everyday time with my family. Does anyone know how these kinds of jobs work? Do I pay for travel expenses and for my daily subsistence allowances? Any help will be appreciated.

What is most important to you when choosing a company to work for?

    • I value a company that values all its employees, not only the tradesman whom they pay top dollar for. The non-trades are pro-ported to be the backbone of any operation but rarely does the rate of pay reflect that. The people who accept these positions are the hardest working on any site or camp. The people who run these billion dollar companies have lost touch with their workforce and have no idea how much is entailed in what is considered non-skilled labor. I think these people are highly skilled, practical, great time managers, organized, honest and give their all. All they expect in return is the same respect warranted the tradesmen.

If you could choose a dream job whether it be in your current field or something else what would it be?

    • My dream job would be to work up north in a remote camp where I can use my time creatively, I would like to work either as a:
      (A) Recreation director( Leisure activities, movie nights, arts and crafts, games, tours, lectures, etc.)
      (B) Kitchen assistant - preferably in the pastry department. However, I do enjoy assembling fruits and vegetables for salads, etc.
      (C) Driver, courier, chaffeur
      (D) Office assistant/hostess
