Process Engineer
Process engineers play a crucial role in building, maintaining and improving large-scale production facilities. They may be involved in the production of a wide variety of goods, from sports drinks to sulfuric acid. They also make sure that any equipment used in the manufacturing process operates safely and efficiently, while helping to achieve optimum levels of quantity and quality in production.
Process engineers are normally required to have a bachelor’s degree. This usually needs to be in either engineering or chemical engineering, depending on the nature of the employer’s business. Some employers may accept a post-secondary technology diploma backed up with at least five years of experience in a related job. A higher degree is usually required for research, consulting or teaching positions.
Industries offering the majority of work include food, mining, oil and gas extraction. Many provinces in Canada offer starting salaries of around C
$52,000, although higher earnings can be achieved in Sarnia, Calgary and Fort McMurray. Salaries for more experienced engineers are generally between C
$80,000 and C
$110,000, depending on the region.
