Investigator

The prevalence of human error and deception has created the need for a vast number of investigative jobs. Central to the work of any investigator is careful analysis and a desire to uncover the truth. Investigation work may sometimes be stressful and require working on more than one case at the same time, so well-organised and patient individuals who are able to take a calm, logical approach to their work make for ideal candidates for this role
Many investigative positions can be found within the insurance industry. These investigators are employed to identify fraudulent claims that predominantly relate to alleged injuries and motor accidents. Claims investigators receive salaries from £16,000 to £25,000, with head positions offering between £30,000 and £45,000 per annum
Other work in this area includes private investigation and road traffic investigation. These more practical-based jobs call for observant, dedicated workers with an enquiring mind and good evidence-gathering abilities. Employers are typically legal firms, insurance companies and local authorities and offer maximum salaries of between £25,000 and £30,000
There are no specific educational requirements for private investigators in the UK but it is common for applicants to come from a security background. It is possible to take a training course in private investigation, however. Within insurance, candidates are normally required to have previous experience in dealing with fraudulent claims.
