Hospitality

Those working in hospitality must enjoy providing as efficient and professional a service as possible to the guests they are serving. This wide field of work covers the reception and entertainment of customers, guests and visitors and provides opportunities to work in hotels, resorts and at conventions.
Low-level positions such as attendant or bell person offer hourly rates of around C
$12, while, at the higher end, directors can expect earnings in excess of C
$100,000 for their role in implementing and maintaining hospitality operations. Catering forms an important part of hospitality and provides numerous job opportunities for cooks (C
$18 an hour), bar staff (C
$8 – 10 an hour) and managers (C
$30,000 – 60,000 per annum).
The industry often requires a certain amount of flexibility, as long hours and shift work are common. The work also calls for a team-player attitude and the ability to work well under pressure. For attendant or assistant positions, personality is usually more important than specific qualifications, while for specialist positions, such as cook, the minimum requirements are generally a Food Safe Certificate and at least two years’ catering experience. Those working at director level, often require a relevant Bachelors degree to enter the industry.
