A broad definition of general insurance is protection against specific contingencies such as accident, fire and theft. There are a range of jobs in the industry, covering all areas of insurance. Insurance investigators, examiners and adjusters will concentrate on looking at customers’ claims and deciding how liable the insurance firm is. The job involves investigating the extent of the damage to property or person and deciding who was at fault
An insurance sales agent will deal with clients and decide what policy will best cover their insurance needs. A position as an actuary is another example of the work available. This is an analytical job which involves producing forecasts and assessing risks so that an insurer can work out policies and calculate potential payments
Qualification requirements vary depending on the position. Actuaries, for example need to be graduates and have various professional qualifications as well. Jobs in general insurance will usually involve working for either an insurance carrier, the company which provides the insurance and covers the risks, or an agent or brokerage, responsible for selling the policies that the carriers’ produce. A broker can expect to start at between £15,000 and £25,000 per year.
