The food service industry in Canada provides a wide range of job opportunities for staff at all levels. Work can be found within hotels and restaurants and calls for hard-working and energetic team players.
Employed in the engine house of the business are chefs, cooks and kitchen staff, who must work together as an efficient team to provide a high standard of culinary service. Cooks and kitchen assistants earn average salaries of C
$10 – 12, with chefs receiving higher rates of C
$12 – 30.
Coordinating with chefs are food service supervisors, who are responsible for food order summaries and stock records and receive average salaries of C
$15 an hour. For front on house positions, such as waiter/waitress and host/hostess, candidates can expect rates of between C
$8 and C
$10 an hour.
Both part-time and full-time positions in food service are available and sometimes the work may be seasonal. Employers often require their staff to have a Food Safe Certificate and some experience within the food industry. Cooks and chefs may need a Cook Trade Certificate, while supervisors may find it useful to speak a second language, such as Punjabi, Korean or Japanese, depending on the type of restaurant they work in.
