Firefighter

The attributes required to be a firefighter include having a scientific mind, being cool under pressure and absolute courage. The role demands a thorough understanding of fire prevention and the nature of fire and how it spreads. Firefighters must be healthy and physically fit in order to do the job effectively. The ability to administer first aid is also an essential skill.
Other skills include having excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as firefighters deal with the public often. Good presentation skills are also required as they provide training to the public and establishments regarding fire prevention. The ability to work as a team and be decisive and work under pressure are other important skills.
To become a firefighter, a candidate must initially pass a firefighting examination. This includes a test of physical strength and fitness and a medical examination. Successful candidates will then go on to formal training. To have successfully completed high school is essential, and a qualification in fire science helps considerably in securing a position. The average salary for this job is C
$30,000, which rises to C
$80,000 for positions demanding more experience and training.
