Event Coordinator
Taking charge of events first created by planners, event coordinators must have exceptional organizational and problem-solving abilities. They must also be confident leaders, capable of directing and instructing a wide range of people while overseeing operations to ensure that everything goes according to plan.
Clients may be companies, institutions or individuals, and coordinators must enjoy working with a variety of different people at all levels. Playing such a hands-on role during the staging of the event requires stamina, energy and commitment, with the ability to find creative, on-the-spot solutions to any problems that may occur. Typical duties involve organizing catering facilities, making seating and transport arrangements and working out the timing of activities. It is also necessary to be present during any rehearsals, as well as being on hand throughout the entire event.
Event coordinators are normally expected to have previous experience in a similar role. Candidates can increase their chances of employment by taking a diploma course in event planning – something that is offered by a number of colleges throughout Canada. Starting salaries are from C
$24,000, which can rise to over C
$50,000 with experience.
