Engineering Technologist

An engineering technologist plays a key role in turning initial engineering concepts into workable designs. With the help of tools such as scientific calculators and computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), this professional produces drawings, maps and flow diagrams according to industry codes and regulations. Other responsibilities may include writing reports, estimating project materials and preparing and interpreting specifications.
The job is a team role and is invariably office-based, although supervisory positions may involve some site work. Areas of work include mapping, environmental consulting, industrial control and automation, urban and regional planning, and highway, structural and electrical design.
Those considering entering the profession should have completed a two-year technical diploma course or preferably a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. Some positions also demand at least three to five years experience. Salaries begin at C
$16 an hour, with an average of C
$30, although this could be as high as C
$60 an hour in places such as Alberta.
