Database Administrator
Normally not an entry-level position, the database administrator, or DBA, is in charge of the day-to-day management and maintenance of a database and its relevant department. Employees will have worked up from database developer or programmer to this administrator-level position. Recent developments in this position require administrators to be responsible for the security of the database as well.
Although most administrator positions will not require extensive programming ability, most employers may require some programming and scripting experience. Many positions, however, will require the ability to script in SQL and basic understanding of Visual Basic or Linux. Specific programming and software requirements are usually clearly stated by employers.
As an administrator, managerial and people skills are important as well. It will be necessary to manage staff, such as programmers and database specialists, as well as to liaise with senior management. Some levels may require presentations on the status of the database and to outline specific issues, including security threats.
This job is usually considered a managerial position and as such, it demands specific qualifications and experience. Salaries for the job start from C
$50,000 aupwards.
