Correctional Officer

Correctional officers are required to have skills in dealing with challenging and potentially dangerous situations effectively within a penitentiary environment. The ability to follow strict procedures is essential as well as having excellent communication skills. It is also important to be physically fit, as the job involves a lot of activity. Another essential skill is having the ability to counsel inmates within the penal system and deal with their needs while maintaining rules.
Additional skills include having the ability to produce accurate reports and records, having knowledge of health and safety policies and being able to carry out inspections thoroughly. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, as well as having a good standard of computer literacy.
Applicants would be expected to have successfully completed high school; there are no formal qualifications required, as in-house training is usually provided. A qualification in counseling is desirable. The average salary for a correctional officer is C
$20,000 per annum.
