The position of financial controller, also called financial manager, is seen as the top of the corporate financial tree and a crucial element of the job is reporting on the company’s financial structure and progress directly to the general manager or CEO. The controller is also responsible for the coordination of all intra-departmental financial planning. Financial analysis, year-end auditing, budgeting, project supervision and control of the general accounting departments are other core tasks.
In all business sectors, the financial manager is seen as the vital link between the company’s CEO and board and its day-to-day financial management. Applicants should have a recognised chartered accountant qualification from one of the three Canadian accountancy bodies, two of which require a degree as an entry qualification and the third as an exit requirement. A record of successful employment in the field should include proven expertise in leadership and motivation.
Commensurate with its high level of responsibility, this position normally commands a good salary, although this is dependent on the size and status of the company. National salary data for the job indicates a range of between C
$50,000 and C
$120,000.
