An incredible amount of trust is placed in an art director, given that they are responsible for what an advertisement ends up looking like. On a day-to-day basis, art directors have a hands-on involvement in creating campaigns that must have an instant and positive impact on consumers, with the aim being to help the product or brand that is being advertised to become successful.
Typical tasks include working to a specific brief with copywriters and generating ideas that must be presented to the client. Putting in work on designs to produce effective advertising campaigns is also required, as is appointing artists and photographers, as well as other specialists that need to be involved in the project, and working within budget. The final results must be edited before being presented to the client.
While an art director normally works typical office hours in an office or studio, venturing out to meet company clients is likely. If they are to thrive in this role, the individual must be highly creative, work well in a team, have an interest in cultural trends or fashions, and have a thorough understanding of printing, photography and typography.
