To be an employee in the administrative department of a company, strong organisational skills and the ability to prioriitise the workload is necessary. From company to company, the demand for qualified individuals varies, but larger companies in fast-paced sectors will usually require a degree in business or public administration or a diploma in secretarial studies.
The majority of administrative work is carried out on computers nowadays, so a detailed knowledge of programs, such as Microsoft Office, is a pre-requisite for employment. Using computers, the employee will be expected to process documents and correspondence, and update spreadsheets and databases.
In general, most offices still file paper documents also, and this must be carried out by the administrative department. Arranging meetings and conferences and minute taking are also vital aspects of the job. The individual will also be responsible for keeping the office supplies well stocked. The salary for this position begins at C
$27,000, but it is possible to earn as much as C
$51,000 with experience and by working for larger companies.
