Although most volunteer work is charity based and involves running high street outlets or fundraising for societies such as the Red Cross or the British Heart Foundation, there are also posts in colleges and schools that entail running institution shops or helping with meals.
Most jobs in the voluntary sector do not call for applicants to have formal qualifications. The main requirements for this kind of work are financial independence, spare time, a friendly personality and the desire to help others.
Charity and other organisations that hire voluntary staff or fundraisers are sited all over the UK. Applicants for work are usually expected to work for around 20 hours a week or possibly just on Saturdays in sales outlets.
