Jobs in the travel sector can refer both to the travel industry, as in leisure travel, or to the ground transportation industry, as in municipal or local transport jobs such as bus and train drivers.
Basic level jobs in the travel field involve operators dealing with bookings, drivers of the various means of travel, including taxis, shuttle buses and coaches, as well as local transportation. Few educational qualifications are required for such positions, with the exception of driving licenses, as training is usually given for other posts.
A sense of responsibility, good timekeeping, and people skills are helpful, and daily tasks will vary according to the job offered. Many of those working in travel will be expected to work shifts and occasional public holidays or unsocial hours.
The trade unions associated with the sector will ensure extra payments for such work. Pay scales for these jobs are not usually high, but free travel for employees and their families may be offered. Expect around C
$18,000 to C
$30,000, often calculated hourly.
