Tour Guide

This challenging and popular position is often seasonal and involves assisting groups of tourists and guiding them around the various sites of interest on the tour itinerary. A good degree of knowledge of local history, culture and other aspects of the destination, including recommended restaurants, pubs, bars, clubs and shopping venues, is essential, as is a talent for communication and problem-solving. Tour guides are either based in a resort or linked with travel agents, serving tourists in a particular area or travel sector such as water sports or skiing.
Daily activities of a tour guide include the preparation and organising of itineraries to coincide with popular events or the availability of specific sites of interest such as museums or eco-tourism areas. Degrees in hospitality and tourism are preferred, but not necessarily essential.
The work is varied and mostly a great deal of fun, as well as offering travel opportunities. Time management and organisational skills are essential qualifications, with many employers requiring some knowledge of a relevant foreign language. Salaries range from C
$16,000 to around C
$40,000, often with accommodation and food included.
