System Administrator

A company hires a system administrator to keep their computer networks and systems running as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Setting up, managing, and upgrading computer servers are among the main responsibilities of the job holder. Backing up servers and preventing them from unauthorized access are other important job components.
This role also requires thorough preparation for and prompt responses to server malfunctions, power outages, and other issues preventing computer systems from working properly. Scripting or other light programming tasks are often, but not always, required.
More experienced workers in this position may find themselves managing projects involving computer systems, supervising less experienced staff, and deciphering computer problems that technical support staff are unable to solve. This career requires a lot of responsibility, technical knowledge, and a surprising amount of creativity in solving computer problems.
Although growing numbers of system administrators have university degrees, especially in computer science, formal education is not necessary to succeed in this profession. More important qualifications are specific server certifications such as Sun Solaris or the MCSA certification for those dealing with Microsoft servers. Salary for the role begins at roughly C
$35,000, but more experienced workers can earn over C
$71,000.
