Police Officer

Police officers play a central role in maintaining social order and providing public safety. These law enforcers respond to emergencies, enforce vehicle and criminal laws, protect people and property, and promote good community relations.
Specific duties typically include identifying and arresting perpetrators of criminal acts, documenting incidences and criminal activity, and assisting victims and other individuals needing first aid for injuries.
Those wanting to enter this profession must complete a probationary period working as a patrol constable for two-years. Upon completion of this period, individuals may choose to stay or transfer to a specialist role.
Police officers must show strict discipline, strong communication skills, good self-defense abilities, and an aptitude for understanding complex legal information. They must posses inductive and deductive reasoning skills, and be able to react very quickly to visual and audio signals.

Salaries vary by force, but typically begin at £20,000 and increase with experience. Benefits usually include paid holiday, sick leave, and health and life insurance. Several officers retire at half-pay after working for about 20 years.
