The position of payroll clerk is often regarded as an entry-level job for school-leavers with basic qualifications and a desire to work up their skills by training in order to get promotion. However, many employees in companies’ payroll teams see the position as a steady means of earning a regular salary by working regular hours in a responsible job. Almost all companies provide on–site training for newcomers to the role. Key duties involve ensuring accurate on-time payment of wages and salaries calculated through payroll software applications.
An aptitude for figures and knowledge of Microsoft and Excel software is essential, with training usually available for payroll software packages where used. The ability to provide advice to employees on company pension, tax and insurance issues requires good person-to-person skills, as does liaising with the human resources and accounts departments. The payroll clerk will spend most office hours at a desk working with various computer programs.
The salary for this position starts at around C
$25,000 and may rise to as much as C
$48,000 commensurate with experience and the number of years in the job. In many companies, the amount may be augmented by bonuses and profit-sharing packages.
