Painter

A painter has the task of painting, refurbishing and renovating buildings and complexes. Those working in the trade can be recruited by builders to paint structures or they may be self-employed. It is normal to undergo training before commencing work.
The keys tasks of the position are: to inspect buildings, including walls, in order to evaluate the painting work which is required, including deciding on the number of coats which will be needed; to estimate costs and time needed for work completion; and to scrape off old paint, to plaster walls and mix colours.
To be successful in the role, it is important to be creative to match and contrast paint colours, to have the ability to coordinate work functions with team members and to be able to work with materials and surfaces like metal, wood, brick, plaster and stone. It is also required to be knowledgeable in painting techniques such as sheen stripping, spackling and distressing.
To be taken on for an apprenticeship or training program, a high school diploma is normally required. The average salary can significantly vary depending on whether the painter is self-employed or working under someone. However, the median salary in Canada is C
$30,868.
