Getting the latest medicine or medical equipment into the hands of doctors and hospitals is the job of a medical sales representative. These front-line people work for pharmaceutical firms and medical supply manufacturers, introducing new products and attempting to sell them to medical personnel.
Most companies provide extensive training about their business and their product lines to new employees, so a Bachelors degree in marketing, business or sales is usually all that’s required. Experience as a salesperson will greatly increase the chances of landing a job, and some knowledge of medical terminology and equipment is very useful.
Medical sales reps travel extensively and need to have excellent interpersonal skills. They also need to be natural salespeople, with bright personalities and a desire to mingle with doctors and other medical personnel.
Salaries for people working in medical sales are very good, averaging around C$70,000 per year, plus bonuses like travel expenses and a vehicle allowance.
