A mechanical technologist is relied upon by a mechanical engineering department for coordinating the quoting, estimating and overall customer service for certain product lines. The job holder has to consult customers on their requirements and then feedback to the design team after the initial analysis.
The role includes preparing, testing and repairing or replacing equipment used for engineering jobs. The ability to troubleshoot, fault-find, diagnose and act on good decisions is needed. The mechanical technologist is required to record all historical and current data sheets, and is typically involved in costing, quotations and estimates of labour costs, in an orderly fashion. Excellent communication skills are required, both written and verbal.
The candidate should have a college diploma in mechanical engineering and technology, as well as at least five years’ experience in a similar role. A CET certificate and proficiency in using MS Word, MS Excel, 3D Inventor and AutoCAD is preferred. Report writing, reasoning, mathematical and delegation skills, as well as the ability to draw conclusions from findings is also required.
