Lab Assistant
Laboratories are busy places with never-ending deadlines, so the workload is lightened by lab assistants. These helpful people work with biologists, chemists, physicists and anyone else involved in scientific research with experiments, data collection and data analysis.
There is work for a lab assistant in many fields, including environmental research, food processing and pharmaceutical research. Although these valued helpers usually work under supervision, they conduct important basic tasks like the preparation of laboratory specimens and materials for testing.
An assistant position usually requires a two-year degree in biology, chemistry or other sciences. Expertise in medical terminology and lab equipment is needed, as well as basic computer skills and good communication skills. Experience while studying is very useful in finding a job as a lab assistant.
After some time as an assistant in the lab, one can expect to move up the ladder and secure a better position. This is a starting position, so most people work while they continue their studies. The average salary of a lab assistant is very good, at around C
$42,000 per year.
