The hotel industry in Canada plays an essential role in Canada’s economy and provides job opportunities for hundreds of thousands of workers across the country. Candidates for this type of work must be good team players and be prepared to work at least 40 hours a week, which may include evenings and weekends.
Positions exist for all levels of staff. Front-line workers, such as concierges and guest services agents, are often the first point of contact for guests and provide general information on facilities and services on offer. Hourly rates are around C$11.00 – 12.50. Supervisors receive an increased rate of C$16.50 per hour and are responsible for drawing up working schedules, training staff and dealing with any work-related issues.
Many behind-the-scenes positions can also be found within the hotel industry. These include chef and cleaner, offering average salaries of C$53,000 and C$23,000 respectively.
Qualifications for hotel staff vary according to the type of work carried out. Managers and supervisors normally require a degree in hospitality, while those working in front-line and administrative positions need good verbal and written skills and should ideally have previous clerical experience.
