Hotel Manager
The general manager of a hotel has full responsibility for all aspects of the efficient guest-oriented running of the premises, whatever its size and location. In large hotels, whilst there are few opportunities to mingle with guests, the hotel manager will spend much of the day meeting with other department heads to ensure the smooth running of the entire operation. Budget planning, monitoring and recruiting staff, troubleshooting and ensuring legal compliances are all included. In smaller hotels, the manager’s job will include more of the day-to-day running tasks, such as reception duties.
Requirements include good communications skills and a friendly personality, the ability to deal with pressure and stress, a high degree of organisational ability, good IT and record-keeping skills, and a desire to help people. Qualifications required usually include a degree in business studies, hotel management or other relevant hospitality sector, although experience can often be just as sought after.
Salaries for the position will vary according to the size and location of the hotel, and will usually include benefits such as food while on duty. Expect amounts ranging from C
$38,000 to C
$110,000 for high-end hotels.
