Hotel Management

Work in hotel management covers a wide variety of duties. Skills and positions range from customer-facing positions in booking, front desk, guest services, porters and drivers, to accountancy and a variety of management positions that can include overseeing marketing and sales, food and nutrition/catering services, housekeeping, facilities management and maintenance, and regional management roles.
The particular demands of each role vary considerably, but most positions will require a high degree of communication skills, the ability to work smoothly in teams and under pressure, and a devotion to high standards. Both English and French languages may be required and some positions will benefit from fluency in other languages.
Customer-facing roles will require a personable and courteous manner, strong communication skills and a professional appearance. Roles involving the management of teams or networks of properties will often demand experience, management qualifications and the flexibility to travel.
Basic roles pay salaries ranging from C
$15,000 to C
$30,000, with a median salary of C
$18,000 available. Assistant managers can expect remuneration to range from C
$17,000 to C
$30,000. Candidates for general management and senior management positions in large organizations will be looking at salaries of between C
$30,000 and C
$80,000, plus bonus and benefits.
