A number of advertising and PR agencies specialise in running campaigns for well-known fashion houses and individual designers, with the better-known design outfits employing for their own PR departments as well. Working on fashion house advertising campaigns is especially interesting nowadays, as the sector has expanded considerably to include off-beat and ultra-modern styles as well as traditional garments and accessories from famous houses. Obviously, a love of fashion and the ability to put this over in a campaign is the most important qualification for this position.
A job in fashion design can be great fun, as it involves working with designers on campaigns which express their creative ideas as well as going to fashion shows. As with most PR jobs, applicants will need to have great communications skills, enthusiasm and a strong work ethic as well as a good relationship with various media representatives. A good sense of timing is also important, given the seasonal nature of every aspect of fashion, as is the ability to deal with highly creative clients in stressful situations. Creativity and a relevant degree are essential even at entry level.
Salaries in advertising and PR vary with the size of the agency and its status, starting at around C
$30,000 and rising beyond C
$70,000. This is a popular position, attracting a large number of hopeful applicants.
