Early childhood educators, or Ece, work in the development of young children in order to prepare them for later life. Each province has its own qualification requirements for the position, sanctioned by law. In most cases, a degree or certificate related to the field is necessary, as is registration with the College of Early Childhood Education. A criminal record check is needed before employment can be started and it helps to have a first aid certificate.
Typical duties include leading activities with children either verbally (singing songs or reading stories) or physically (dancing, playing). The leading of creative activities, such as arts and crafts lessons, may also be required. The job involves monitoring children's development and looking out for difficulties in learning or behavioral problems. Basic duties such as preparing snacks or keeping play areas hygienic are important.
To keep abreast of early child development, the job holder may need to attend seminars on new practices surrounding the field. The ideal candidate for the position would be a caring educator who is able to build strong relationships with the children's parents.
