Desktop Support

Desktop support positions can either be employed as in-house IT support or in a call centre. The position plays an integral part in providing essential support to staff, customers or end-users. A technical background in computer software or telecommunications is a plus, but not a requirement. Most companies will provide intensive in-house training to desktop support staff, to train them on the specific software, hardware, computer or telecom systems they will be dealing with.
Work is normally in shifts; this is especially true when working at a call centre; however, in-house support may also require coverage around the clock. Personal demeanour is important, especially when working on the telephone, and a confident voice and clear articulation are musts. Some desktop support positions require only working on a computer rather than voice calls. Meticulousness and the ability to identify and problem-solve are key attributes. Attention to detail and good people skills are also important.
Salaries for this type of job are usually commensurate with complexity and work hours. Median salaries range around C
$32,000.
