The role of a custodian or janitor is to work with minimal supervision, being proactive to keep the premises clean, tidy and safe of any spills or broken equipment which could be potentially dangerous. Experience is not necessarily required as many firms offer training for the right candidate, although some experience is seen as an asset.
Duties include cleaning, sweeping, mopping and waxing floors as well as disinfecting washrooms, basins and fixtures. Emptying of waste containers, replenishing stock and reordering diminishing stocks are also part of day-to-day responsibilities. The custodian will report to the operations or floor manager, depending on the employer. The ability to lift and carry up to 10kgs is required and the ideal candidate will be of good health.
The average salary will depend on the location, the employer and the amount of over-time available, although job holders expect between C
$26,494 and C
$41,4177. The upper scale is for custodian workers with prior experience or a head janitor leading a team.
