Cobol
Capable Cobol programmers are in high demand all over the world. This programme first appeared 50 years ago and since then has been widely used in the domains of business computing, finance and various administrative fields. Canada is no exception and experienced programmers are always able to find a position.
Cobol programmers are employed in commercial, military and government departments throughout the country and might find themselves writing applications for use on operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Linux or IBM z/OS.
Although the programme is probably the simplest currently in use, professionals using it to write IT applications are expected to be fully conversant with all aspects of it. Writers need to be practiced in creating data types such as numeric fixed point and binary floating-point, copybooks and syntax.
As programmers in this field are highly sought after, a person with less than two years experience can command an annual salary in excess of C
$50,000. Programmers with specific application or operating system knowledge and more experience receive a commensurate reward which can see them earning up to C
$90,000 a year.
