Chemical Technologist
A chemical technologist – also known as a laboratory technician, environmental technician and physical sciences technician – provides technical support in chemical-related areas. Duties involve carrying out chemical reactions, preparing and analyzing samples and presenting any findings. Maintenance and upgrade of laboratory equipment and instruments is also an integral part of the job.
Working either alone or in a team, chemical technologists are usually employed in laboratories or industrial plants within chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, metallurgical or agricultural companies. The work can be hazardous and there is often lifting involved, so a certain degree of physical fitness is also necessary for the job.
Employers usually expect a two-year chemical technology diploma. School leavers wishing to train should have good English, maths and chemistry results before applying to the relevant colleges.
Wages are from C
$14.00 to C
$21.00 an hour for a 40-hour week, which will usually involve working shifts. Calgary offers a better rate of pay, which could be as high as C
$30.50 an hour for more experienced workers.
